Blaauwberg
The Blaauwberg coast is best known for its spectacular views of Table Mountain across Table Bay.
The area encompasses 48 kilometres of sandy white beaches all with magnificent views of Cape Town´s Three Peaks (Devil´s Peak, Table Mountain and Lion´s Head) as well as Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela and many other political prisoners spent part of their sentences.
This Blaauwberg region, one of the fastest growing areas in the Western Cape, lies to the north of Cape Town city centre and is the gateway to the Cape West Coast. There are plenty of bars, restaurants and shopping malls for those so inclined, but best to head for the beaches to watch kite and wind surfers doing ridiculous aerial maneuvers.
The area is also home to the Koeberg Nuclear Power station, the only nuclear power station on the African continent and one which supplies most of the Western Cape with its electricity.
Bloubergstrand is situated on the Blaauwberg Coast about 20 minutes drive from the Cape Town city centre and about 30 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. It is the gateway to the seafood mecca of the Cape West Coast.
Bloubergstrand offers one of the best views of Table Mountain. This is the view that is often shown on postcards and pictures.
The white sand beach is ideal for a refreshing swim in the Atlantic Ocean, windsurfing and kite surfing. Big Bay is a surfers´ paradise and hosts several national and international competitions. Little Bay is a nice family beach and suitable for sunbathers. There are also a number of places for surf anglers.
In Bloubergstrand visitors can dine in an original fisherman´s cottage at the waters edge while enjoying a beautiful sunset. |
